A row of cats stands shoulder to shoulder around the mug, every one of them looking straight out at you. They carry on round the back, so you never see the whole committee at once. Ginger tabby, cream, black and white, one in blue grey.

Each colour is laid inside a drawn black line and pools slightly under the glaze, sitting a little proud of the white porcelain. The rim is not quite a circle. Underneath the foot there is a small mark brushed in blue by whoever painted it.

Because the painting is done by hand, the faces come out differently from one mug to the next. Some cats end up wide awake, some half asleep. No two committees are quite the same, and the one that arrives will not be the one photographed here.

8.5 cm across x 9 cm high, and 11.7 cm including the handle. Holds 300 ml filled to the brim, so nearer 250 ml in normal use.

Dishwasher and microwave safe. Not suitable for oven use.
Every piece is painted by hand, so the position of the cats, the depth of the colour and the expressions differ from one to the next. Slight irregularity in the rim and small variations in the glaze belong to the making rather than being faults.

Tea, coffee and everyday use. A generous mugful rather than a small cup.

About the maker
Hachiemon Kiln began in 1879, when Mori Koichiro, the fourth generation of his family in the trade, had pottery stone brought by sea from Amakusa and carted inland to a mill where a water wheel crushed it into clay. The kiln took its present name in 1919 and works today in Arita, the town where porcelain was first made in Japan, from stone found at Izumiyama. It trades as Daikei, and a Mori still runs it.
