Two ways of making a notebook, from France and from Japan.
The Black Cypress and Botanical Garden notebooks are bound by hand in south-west France by 23janvier, with an exposed Japanese stab binding: the thread fans across the top edge, so you can see how the block is held together. The covers are thick cotton paper printed with plants, and inside are 44 folded pages of cream paper for writing or drawing.
The RO-BIKI pocket notebooks, here in Hokusai, Lighthouse and Mountain Night covers, come from Yamamoto Paper in Sakai, Osaka, paper merchants since 1972. They are passport-sized and thread-bound to open flat, with 60 pages of ivory dot grid paper and a waxed cover that creases and darkens as it is carried. The White Cat A5 notebook, drawn by the illustrator mula for RYU-RYU in Ashiya, has 64 pages of 5 mm grid.
