Christmas without the obvious: a slow list for 2026

Christmas 2026

A short Christmas list built the slow way: fewer objects, each one made by somebody nameable, and nothing chosen because it fills a gap in a stocking.

At a glance

Stockings and small gifts: £6 to £15

The main gift: £28 to £68

Posting: packed in Edinburgh, posted within one to two business days by Royal Mail Tracked 48

Presentation: paper-based packaging, handwritten card, no prices inside

Buy fewer things and buy them earlier

Most Christmas disappointment is a scheduling problem rather than a taste problem. Objects bought in the third week of December are bought from whatever is left in whichever shop is open, which is how everyone ends up giving the same four things.

Small studios also work to their own pace. A leather maker in Tokyo, a letterpress workshop in Brussels and a woman pressing plants in south-west France do not hold deep stock. Buying in November is not a marketing instruction. It is simply when the range is complete.

For the stocking

A RO-BIKI waxed pocket notebook at six pounds, made in Japan with a waxed cover that is designed to crease and darken in a pocket. A set of three RYU-RYU mini note cards at seven pounds fifty, embossed from Yoko Fujiki's embroidered illustrations. A RYU-RYU to-do list pad at ten pounds with a line of gold foil along the foot advising the reader to put off today what can be done tomorrow.

For the person with a bare wall

A pressed botanical from 23fleurs, from fourteen pounds. A ginkgo leaf, a Japanese maple or a hydrangea, gathered in south-west France and pressed by hand over several weeks. It arrives unframed, so the frame can be the second half of the gift, or left to them.

For the person who writes

A Japanese-bound A5 notebook from 23janvier at twenty-eight pounds, hand-bound in south-west France with thread fanning across the top edge. The Botanical Garden cover prints the plants inside the cover as well, so they carry on where only the owner will see them.

Or letterpress note cards from Le Typographe in Brussels at twelve pounds for five, in peach with burgundy envelopes, or copper with barley.

For the person who carries everything

Japanese leather from Tokyo. A necklace purse at thirty-two pounds, worn at the neck without a bag. A Yuzen leather key clip at thirty-eight, hand-coloured in a kimono dyeing tradition and fitted with three detachable hooks. Or the wildflower clasp wallet at sixty-eight, in oil-shrink leather with a sprung coin frame that opens on its own.

How it arrives

Everything is packed in Edinburgh in paper-based packaging, with tissue against the object and a handwritten card. No prices appear inside, so a parcel can be given on exactly as it arrives. Orders over forty pounds are posted free; below that, delivery is three pounds ninety-five by Royal Mail Tracked 48.

For Christmas delivery, allow for Royal Mail's published last posting dates as well as the one to two business days Ourooh takes to pack. Ordering by the end of the first week of December is comfortable. Later than that depends on the post rather than on the shop.

When should I order Christmas gifts from a small shop?

Late November to the first week of December. Small studios do not restock quickly, so the range is at its fullest earlier than in larger shops.

Do orders arrive gift ready?

Yes. Paper-based packaging, tissue against the object, a handwritten card and no prices inside.

What is a good Christmas gift for someone who dislikes clutter?

Something used or carried rather than displayed. A pocket notebook, a small leather pouch or a set of cards takes up no shelf space at all.

Are these objects sold widely in the UK?

They are bought in small quantities from independent makers and small studios in Japan, France and Belgium, most of which supply British shops rarely. Nothing here is stocked because it is easy to get.
