Bound by hand in south-west France by 23janvier, with black thread fanning out from two points along the top edge in a Japanese stab binding that is structural and decorative at once. The stitching sits a little differently on every copy.

Small dark cypress sprigs repeat across a warm white cover in loose horizontal rows, with a rough, brush-like quality that softens the regularity of the pattern. The cover is thick cotton paper with folded edges, so it holds its shape in a bag, and inside are 44 folded pages of cream paper that take ink and pencil equally well.

About the maker
23janvier is the south-west France paper studio founded in 2013 by visual artist Marie-Charlotte. The atelier develops each piece from botanical study through printing and binding, with close attention to natural papers and plant form.
