Hokusai's view of Fuji from Kanaya, where the river had no bridge and travellers were carried across on the shoulders of porters. The mountain sits at the top under its snow line. Below it, dozens of figures wade into blue water with palanquins and baggage held above their heads.

The scene runs over the spine and carries on across the back, so the village and its thatched roofs end up on the side nobody photographs. Each figure is a couple of millimetres across, and every one of them is doing something.

The wax has pulled the print down into the paper until the surface reads almost like cloth. It will crease and darken further in a pocket, which is the point of it. The dot grid inside is faint, leaving room for notes and drawings without having to choose between them.

Material
Waxed paper cover. 60 pages of rough ivory premium writing paper with a 5 mm dot grid. Thread-bound.
Dimensions
12.5 x 8.8 cm, 60 pages
Made in
Japan
Care
Keep dry. Creases, scuffs and darkening are expected as the waxed cover is used. Very wet inks or broad nibs may behave differently, so test first.
