Design

Yuzen, the dyeing technique developed for kimono silk, worked by hand onto a small panel of cowhide. Asakusa Bunko began in 1983 as a kimono maker and moved the same methods across to white-tanned Himeji leather, which they still do at their workshop in Asakusabashi, Tokyo.

A stencil lays the colour down, a yuzen painter goes over it by hand, and a heated die then presses the leather under roughly a hundred tonnes so the pattern stands up from the surface. One panel carries blue and violet flowers, one an owl among leaves and blossom, one a calico cat asleep among lotus and plum. Because the painting is done by hand, small differences between pieces are part of the work.

The sprung brass clip fastens to a bag or a pocket, keeping keys close to hand rather than at the bottom under everything else. Three detachable hooks hang from the lower fitting, so one key can be taken off without taking the rest. The hardware gives the painted leather enough weight to feel like an object in its own right. It arrives in its own box, stamped in gold.

Care
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Keep away from prolonged moisture, direct heat and strong sunlight.
The painted surface is worked by hand, so small differences in line and colour occur between pieces. Avoid rubbing the painting against hard edges or keys.
Suitable for
House, car and office keys. Clips inside a bag pocket, or outside as a visible detail.

About the maker
Asakusa Bunko began in 1983 as a kimono maker and now applies the same dyeing techniques to leather at its workshop in Asakusabashi, Tokyo. White-tanned Himeji cowhide is stencil-dyed, painted over by hand by a yuzen painter, then pressed under a heated die to raise the pattern. The metal frames are cast individually by a local accessory maker.
